AI as a game changer for active managers in asset management

Put simply, the lines in asset management appear to be clearly drawn: actively managed funds on one side and ETFs on the other. More recently, so-called actively managed ETFs have also emerged in Europe, effectively creating a hybrid between the two worlds.

What is still at a relatively early stage, however, is the use of artificial intelligence in actual buy and sell decisions. In terms of information gathering, AI has already become part of day-to-day operations. That AI will have a profound impact – not only across industries in general, but also specifically in asset management – is beyond dispute among professionals, regardless of which financial products ultimately prevail.

One of the particularly sharp minds in this field – with a focus on machine learning – is Dr. Bolko Hohaus of HCP Asset Management SA in Geneva. On Wednesday, 17 December 2025, I had the opportunity to exchange views with him for half an hour over a cup of tea at the lovely Motel One in Zurich. His proprietary system, developed over several years, has proven so successful that a growing number of Swiss banks are now seeking discussions with him – as are external asset managers and family offices. The conversation was truly fascinating, and much of it was completely new to me! Thomas J. Caduff, CEO, Fundplat LLC
